What is kindness?
For me it's taking some time to get away from the hustle and bustle of life; a walk by the sea or an hour hidden away in a coffee shop watching the world go by. Nothing to do, nowhere to be. It's something that naturally nurtures the soul. Perhaps something that is low on our priority list, or something we fit in when all of the other "stuff" is complete. Psychologist and founder of the Compassionate Mind foundation, Paul Gilbert talks about a three part emotional system comprising, threat, drive and soothing. In our busy career driven lives it's easy for these to get out of balance leaving us feeling frazzled or stuck on a treadmill. Luckily, studies in neuroscience demonstrate that we can nurture our soothing system and improve our sense of well being. Yesterday, I guided my group through a Loving Kindness meditation a practice that left us all feeling calm and content after a busy day in the office.
